IVF: A Four-Stage Process at Family Fertility & IVF Center Lahore
Stage 1: Ovarian Stimulation, Monitoring, and Ovulation Triggering To increase the chances of pregnancy, the first stage involves stimulating the ovaries to produce a larger number of mature eggs. Medications are administered to prevent premature egg release and encourage the development of ovarian follicles, usually ranging from 5 to 10.
Stage 2: Egg Retrieval Once ovarian stimulation is complete and the follicles have matured, the doctor will perform an egg retrieval procedure. This can be carried out under mild sedation, local anesthesia, or in some cases, general anesthesia. Using ultrasound guidance, a needle is gently passed through the vagina to extract fluid from each mature follicle. The fluid is then examined to identify retrieved eggs, which are subsequently placed in an incubator. Not all eggs collected will be used in the current IVF cycle.
Stage 3: Fertilization Approximately two hours prior to egg retrieval, a semen sample is collected from the male partner. The sample undergoes processing to select the healthiest and most active sperm. The chosen sperm are then combined with the eggs in an incubator set to match the woman’s body temperature. The following day, the eggs are examined under a microscope to determine if fertilization has occurred. If successful, the resulting embryos will be ready for transfer to the uterus a few days later.
Stage 4: Embryo Development and Transfer The duration of embryo development in the laboratory before transfer will be discussed with your doctor. Typically, transfer takes place between day two (2-4 cell stage) and day five (blastocyst stage – around 100 cells) of development. This allows for assessment of embryo cleavage and ensures that only embryos with the potential for pregnancy are selected. Embryo transfer itself is a straightforward procedure that can be performed without anesthesia. The embryos are placed in a catheter and transferred to the uterus. The number of embryos transferred depends on factors such as the woman’s age, infertility cause, pregnancy history, and other considerations. However, in most cases, single embryo transfer is recommended to reduce the risk of a twin pregnancy. If there are additional good-quality embryos remaining, they may be cryopreserved (frozen) for future use.
